Home of the vikings, cute little puffins and a good ole grilled sheep's head. Iceland is a captivating island with some of the most gorgeous landscape you will ever see. I highly recommend putting the land of fire and ice on your bucket list - here are a few tidbits to know before making the journey over:
- The International Airport is actually in Keflavik, which is a 45 minute bus ride from the city center of Reykjavik.
- Be careful when booking with the 'cheap' airlines such as WOW and Easyjet. They draw you in with their awesome flight deals but then charge for every single checked bag (and sometimes carry ons).
- Everyone in Iceland speaks amazing english, so there is no need to try and attempt Icelandic, I say attempt because it's a really freaking hard language.
- AirBnB is the best way to go! There is a small, cute little basement apartment on Flokagata Street which is 5 minute walk to the city center. It is cheaper than hotels and most of the hostels, plus you have the option of cooking at home for most your meals. (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4322780)
- Cooking at home brings me to my next major point... Iceland is EXPENSIVE! Of course I don't know what your budget is but an average meal out is around 2,500 Icelandic Krona ($22) that is excluding drinks, appetizer, snacks or dessert. With my boyfriend and I we would be looking at almost $50 per meal, which is why cooking at home works very nicely for us.
- Of course the main reason to visit Iceland is it's beautiful scenery and the dancing Northern Lights. There are so many tour options to allow you to see everything, it can get a tad overwhelming. On the main strip of Laugavegur there is a tourist office 'What's On', pop in there and chat with the guides, they are insanely helpful in choosing the best itinerary for your budget and stay.
- The water, oh the water! Iceland has such clean, refreshing beautiful water. Pour yourself a glass of tap water and enjoy!
- Time of year... winter is the best for the Northern Lights but be careful, we have had some bad luck with weather which has kept us inside a lot of the time. February is also the month for the Winter Lights Festival, a music tour weekend, cream buff day and all you can eat day.
Cheers,
